Response to History of Modern Astrophysics Survey, 1980.

Questionnaire form with brief, handwritten responses and a letter to Spencer Weart, director of AIP's Center for History of Physics, and David DeVorkin, History of Astrophysics Project staff member. Recipients were asked to discuss their decision to enter astronomy; their work during the Second World War; their professional work outside astronomy; the fields in which they have been most active, the advances in both those fields and others, and their own accomplishments and satisfactions; sources of funding; their perceptions of public attitudes; the influence of religion or philosophy on their work as astronomers; and their opinions on questions relating to the Big Bang Theory, cosmology, up-coming important developments, and the search for extraterrestrial intelligence.

Spencer R. Weart, born in 1942, received a B.A. in Physics at Cornell University in 1963 and a Ph. D. in Physics and Astrophysics at the University of Colorado, Boulder, in 1968. He then worked for three years at CalTech as a Fellow of the Mt. Wilson and Palomar Observatories, publishing papers in leading scientific journals.
